This is Swiss chard. You eat it. |
The most common question I get when working in the First
Ward Community Garden is the often the hardest one for me to answer.
Someone might be holding up a leafy mustard
green, a thick leek or a slim eggplant with two fingers and a look of distrust.
What’s this and what do I do with it?
My short answer is always – You eat it.
The long answer might involve a little olive oil, some
garlic, a splash of white wine and a quick saute in a pan over medium heat.
Or chopping it with other leafy greens and serving it with raw carrots, radishes, green peppers and a light balsamic vinaigrette.
My really long answer is going to be this blog.
Each week I’ll highlight some things that are growing in the
garden and try to answer the question “What do I do with it?”
Like everyone else, I'm busy and can't afford to spend more time in the kitchen and I firmly believe that the best knife for any job is whichever one is clean at the moment.
So recipes will be easy and after a few months hopefully people see that they can eat out of the First Ward garden any (and maybe every) day of the week.
